SATURDAY, August 23, 7-9pm - Melissa Bastian's Anywhere I Lay My Head zine release (1 Bleecker St.)
"Anywhere I lay my head" recounts Melissa Bastian's experience with Hurricane Katrina and the ways in which she rebuilt her life and dealt with the ramifications of the disaster. She will be present for the full extent of the event to answer questions and discuss the work, and will be doing a short reading at 8pm. Paintings and photographs of the New Orleans area will be on display that correlate with the context of the work. Also on display will be personal items such as Ms. Bastian's scrap book of newspaper clippings and her photographs from the first visits back to the city. The event has been intentionally scheduled to fall just six days before the third anniversay of Katrina; the artist hopes to remind people of the storm and to bring attention to the fact that while enormous progress has been made, many people and parts of the city are still struggling. 25% of any revenue generated from zine or artwork sales will be donated to the Common Ground Collective in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans.

EVERY MONDAY 8pm - Writer's Round @ 1 Bleecker St.

Writer's Round is a weekly meeting space for local writers to get together, share, and critique one another's work. Authors read their work aloud, are asked to bring copies for others to read, and invite commentary in a constructive and community oriented environment.

Writer's Round by-laws

Writer's Round meets every Monday @ Think Coffee 1 Bleecker St. starting at 8pm for approximately 2 hours.

Authors can submit up to five pages of writing (or 15 minutes reading length), and need to bring copies that group members can read and take notes on.

Any genre of writing is acceptable material (i.e. non-fiction, fiction, poetry, etc.)

Authors read their work aloud, following which, comments are given by the group without the writer's response (unless a direct question is asked) for several minutes. Then there is a short period of discussion between the group and the author.

The group is asked to include something they liked about the writing during the group response portion of the critique.

Writer's Round is open to the public, free of charge, and a positive space for local writers to invite commentary in a constructive and community oriented environment.
